A bit about Home Furnishings and Furniture

These auctions are our most regular sales every two weeks and fit in and around our specialist auctions, they are held on a Fridays with the auction commencing, normally, at 10 am. Viewing is the day before although the auction goes live on the internet the week before. All auctions are open to the public to attend and bid as well as through our website for online bidding, Easy Live Auctions and The Saleroom.

Bric-a-brac

For anyone not in the know, the easiest way to describe this is by quoting the definition from Wikipedia. "Bric-à-brac or bric-a-brac (origin French), first used in the Victorian era, refers to lesser objets d'art forming collections of curios, such as elaborately decorated teacups and small vases, compositions of feathers or wax flowers under glass domes, decorated eggshells, porcelain figurines, painted miniatures or photographs in stand-up frames, and so on.

In middle-class homes bric-à-brac was used as ornament on mantelpieces, tables, and shelves, or was displayed in curio cabinets: sometimes these cabinets have glass doors to display the items within while protecting them from dust. Today, "bric-à-brac" refers to a selection of items of modest value, often sold in street markets and charity shops, and may be more commonly known in colloquial English as "knick knacks."

Electrical Goods

Mainly domestic appliances such as washing machines, fridges and freezers, vacuum cleaners, TV's and lamps fall into this category but it can include other electrical goods like heaters, fans, ovens etc.  All goods have an electrical test carried out prior to sale to ensure they are safe for use.

Garden and Garage

This section covers all manner of items but generally speaking it includes anything that you might find in a garage, workshop, garden shed or garden. Nearly every house clearance provides entries for this section, from bicycles, power tools and garden furniture to old fireplaces and mobility scooters.

Home Furnishings

Modern and Victorian furnishings can be found here.  In recent times we have sold some modern designer furniture by Kelly Hoppen but if stripped pine or a restoration project is more your thing, then there is a constant supply passing through the saleroom.  Carpets and rugs can also be found in this section.

Kitchen and Tableware

This section does what it says on the tin!  With the exception of kitchen appliances, you will find anything that you might expect to see in any kitchen or dining room.  Cutlery, crockery, pots and pans, china & glass are all included in these lots.  Often boxed into job lots, this section is another where it pays to have a good rummage.

Miscellaneous

A very broad term that covers anything that doesn't fit into any of the other main categories.

Pictures and Prints

Nearly every house clearance includes some pictures, prints and mirrors.  Higher value lots are sold in our Antique and Fine Art sales and the rest are offered in our regular home furnishings auctions.  It isn't uncommon for the frames to be worth more than the print but either way there is usually a ready market for them.
