1951 MG TD/C, Mk 2, 1250cc. Registration number KAS 395 (non transferrable). Chassis number TD/C9610, EXL/NA. Body number 8992/75543. Engine number XPAG/TD/LHX 9773. Mileage today is 10558.
Sold with the V5C, keys and a list of what has been undertaken. It should be noted this is a rare matching numbers car.
Not to be confused with the TD2 the TD Mk2 (or TD/C), was created as an upgraded TD with competition in mind. The factory had been entering modified TDs in Hill Climb competitions, and doing rather well until they were disqualified as not being ‘production’ models. So, the Mark 2 was offered with the modifications that improved its performance over the standard car and made it legal for competition.
These improvements included four supplementary Andrex friction shock absorbers at each corner and twin SU fuel pumps. The engine had raised compression (8.6:1) with larger valves and stiffer valve springs providing an extra 3bhp, which may not seem a lot but coupled with the higher ratio final drive improved the overall performance and top speed.
Out of around 30,000 TDs made between 1950 and 1953 around 1700 were the Mark 2 and most were exported to the US.
KAS ( a matching numbers car) was sent to the USA in November 1951 and was repatriated in November 1996. When here, it was subject to a body off restoration and conversion to right hand drive.
The engine was fully rebuilt, the crank reground with new bearings, new piston rings, valves reground and the camshaft bearings were replaced, with both fuel pumps being overhauled as well. The gearbox was overhauled with new bearings and seals and the clutch replaced. The rear axle had its ratio changed to 4.3:1 and the speedo (now chrometric) recalibrated, this resulted in an increase of 17MPH per 1000 revs.
All the electrics were overhauled, including fitting halogen bulbs and discret indicators. An isolator switch has been fitted. The Andrex shock absorbers were replaced with replicas.
There are no records of the above, or of the respray and interior, which all were presumably undertaken before the car was eventually registered with DVLA in 2002.
KAS has now mellowed nicely, with good patina and drives well when taken out on our private road.
Purchased recently by our vendor, as he had one back in the day, he realises his advancing years means that he will not actually look after this rare TDC Mark 2 as he should and he has decided to let another custodian take over the ownership.
Sold with the V5C and a list of what has been undertaken. It should be noted this is a rare matching numbers car.
