About The Exchange Saleroom

The Exchange Saleroom first opened its doors in 1964 and was the brainchild of Chris Dee, a senior partner in the old established firm Dee Atkinson & Harrison. Over fifty years on and the Exchange Saleroom is still going strong, holding some twenty-six auctions held every year. In 2016 Andy Spicer, formally of the international auctioneers, Bonhams, was appointed saleroom manager and the firm began to embrace the digital age. New working procedures were introduced, the computer system was upgraded and the quality of the lots was increased, one of the largest changes was the introduction of thrice yearly Classic Car & Motorcycle auctions, held off site at the prestigious Sledmere House.

All of the auctions are hosted by the renowned online live bidding platform, thesaleroom.com; this allows vendors property to be viewed by the national and global marketplace. Today over 50% of lots offered are bought by internet buyers whether they be in Australia or at home in Driffield, with the Collectors auction this can rise to 65%, the internet bidders are also very strong underbidders and this has resulted in a significant lift in the prices achieved and a drop in the number of unsold lots. In 2016 the average lot value in a Home Furnishing auction was £25, today it is in the region of £75/85.

The Classic Car & Motorcycle auctions also use the-saleroom.com whilst at Sledmere House with dedicated internet provided by Spicers and online banking available for smooth, hassle free transactions. We have become the largest Classic Motorcycle auctioneers in the North of England and have the record, at £48,500 for the most expensive motorcycle sold at auction in the North.
