A Victorian electroplated paraffin oil lamp, the opaline glass shade to a clear glass chimney mounted on a Youngs patent plated burner to a glass bowl, the whole mounted on a Corinthian column with square stepped base, height 73 cm.
James Young (1811 - 1883) was a Scottish chemist best known for his method of distilling paraffin from coal and oil shales, his refinery was at Addiewell, near West Calder. It was a substantial industrial complex, in its time one of the largest chemical works in Scotland, it closed in 1921.
